Stronger Than Yesterday

The Story

In August of 2018, our great friend, Rick Nelson at Innovative Advertising approached us with an animation project for their client, a health insurance company. While it’s pretty common for projects to start that way for us, this project was a bit different. Instead of giving us a creative brief and telling us to, “go!”, they wanted us to work with their in-house team to complete the project. Our first idea… “Let’s meet the team in New Orleans!”.

After we got to New Orleans and checked out some of the sights, we went to the Innovative Advertising office to get to work. Learning more about the goal for the project, as an integrated team, we put together a creative brief.

The Brief

Each film would feature a “disease” with a story about overcoming difficult times. The project would include 4 films at around 1 min each. Illustration and animation should match the story being told.

Approach

The team at Innovative Advertising had done films in the past, but not many animated films. So our role early on with the project was to help them make good decisions with the design & illustration so we could animate without any issues when it became our turn in the process.

Once the initial illustration style was landed on, we worked with Innovative Advertising in creating characters, environments, and scenes that we could use in our animations. After a bit of back and forth to find the right workflow, we were off to the races animating everything they threw at us and laying it out in a clear and concise storyline.

When it came to speed, we knew that to create the somber feeling they were going for that we needed to slow things down a little bit. Quick movements or fast cuts might give the feeling of high energy or excitement (not what we wanted). So, all character movements would be exaggerated in a slower way then we might normally create.

Once animation for each video was complete, we sent back to the Innovative Advertising team where they finished the films with music and sound.

Here’s a look at the 3 additional films in the project:
